Networking Standards are agreements including technical specifications. On the other hand, Networking Standards Organisations are responsible for setting standards for various industries.

What is Networking Standards Organisations

ANSI (American National Standards Institute)

  • ANSI (American National Standards Institute)– ANSI is networking standards organisation composed of about thousands or more representatives from industry and government. They together determine standards for the electronics industry and other areas such as chemical and nuclear engineering, construction and health and safety.

EIA and TIA – Networking standards organisations

  • EIA and TIA- EIA (Electronic Industries Alliance) is a trade organization of representatives from electronics manufacturers across the United States. Primary focus of TIA (Telecommunication Industry Association) is to maintain standards for IT (Information Technology), wireless, fiber optics, telephone equipment and satellite. Hence alliance of both TIA and EIA is best known for its guidelines to install network cable in commercial buildings.

IEEE- IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)

  • IEEE- IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) or I-triple-E, is an international society or group of engineering professionals. It aims to promote development and education in electrical engineering and computer science fields. Networking professionals highly respect IEEE technical documents and standards. On the other hand, you will also find references to IEEE standards those come with NICs (Network Interface Cards).

ISO (International Organization for Standardization)

  • International Organization for Standardization is stationed in Geneva, Switzerland. ISO is a collection of standards organizations representing 146 countries. The primary focus of ISO is to establish international technological standards to facilitate global exchange of information as well as barrier-free trade.

ITU – Telecommunication Networking Standards Organisations

  • ITU- ITU (International Telecommunication Union) is a specialized United Nations Agency that regulates international telecommunications including radio and TV frequencies, satellite and telephony specifications, Networking Infrastructure and tariffs applied to global communications. Typically, ITU documents pertain more to global telecommunications issues than to industry technical specifications. However, core task of ITU is to implement worldwide internet services.

ISOC (Internet Society)

  • Internet Society is a professional membership society that helps to establish technical standards for internet. IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) is one the most known internet society group that is responsible to set standard for how systems communicate over the internet.

IANA and ICANN- IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority)

  • IANA and ICANN- IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) kept all the records of available and reserved IP addresses, in early internet history. In the late 1990s, the US Department of Commerce (DOC) funded IANA and decided to overhaul IP addressing and domain name management. Hence, DOC recommended the formation of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), a private, non-profit corporation. ICANN is now responsible for IP addressing and domain name management. However IANA continues to perform the system administration.
